Questions

1. What is the yield of a reaction which produced 4g of product if the predicted yield was 5g? Sow your working.

2. Why might a reaction with a low percentage yield be bad for sustainable development?

3. Describe 3 factors that can reduce the percentage yield of a reaction.

4. Potassium nitrate is a fertiliser. It can be produced by neutralising nitric acid (HNO3) with potassium hydroxide (KOH).

130g of potassium nitrate was produced from 126g of nitric acid. The predicted yield of potassium nitrate was 202g. Calculate the percentage yield of potassium nitrate.

1. (4/5) x 100

   =80%

2. It is because a low product yield means that resources are wasted rather than being saved for future generations.

3. When you filter a liquid to remove solid particles, you nearly always lose a bit of liquid or a bit of solid. Liquids evaporates all the time. Some of the liquid will always gets left behind on the inside surface of the old container when transfering.
